Personal History
Within the 1st Jaeger Regiment nicknamed the "Complainers", Toris stands out for her gentle and virtuous nature. She is not only the unit's finest sniper but also a skilled ambassador who navigates interpersonal relations with ease. Toris is clearly ambitious; few doubt she is striving to become the next commander, and many outsiders pin their hopes on her to transform the corps' notoriously unruly culture. In reality, however, her drive stems from more than just a desire for advancement, it is fueled by a twisted obsession with the current commander, Leonie.
When she first joined the corps, Toris was known as the "artsy girl who played a mean guitar." However, upon realizing that artistic talent played no role in the unit's performance evaluations, she decisively abandoned this "useless" hobby to devote herself entirely to training. She consistently ranked first in everything, from stealth and reconnaissance to tactical shooting across diverse environments, and was soon hailed as the corps' best warrior, eventually surpassing the records Leonie herself had set years prior.
Yet, no one would go so far as to say she has surpassed the Leonie of old. While Toris is undeniably diligent in her training, she is also prone to using clever shortcuts to boost her results. For instance, during the "traversing a chemical contamination zone" drill, she would detach her gas mask's filter canister to make the trek easier, reattaching it only just before the finish line to ensure smoother breathing. While many knew of such tricks, none executed them with Toris's practiced ease; this reveals her intensely goal-oriented mindset, she fully commits to anything that aids her objective while discarding anything that offers no direct benefit.
In stark contrast to her comrades, who tend to be blunt and rough around the edges, Toris places great importance on her "feminine charm" when interacting with others. During training and combat, she was just as decisive and fiercely competitive as anyone else; yet, whenever outsiders were around, she would adopt a demure, adorable persona, politely asking the men to carry heavy loads or open stubborn bottle caps for her. She could eat wild rats and venomous snakes raw without a second thought during stealth training, but back at campn especially in the presence of outsiders, she would nibble delicately at her meals and even fold her used tissues into neat little squares. Although she had given up music, Doris had taken up the art of baking; whenever she had a spare moment, she would don a small apron and oven mitts, happily bustling about the oven.
Her comrades attributed Toris’s social savvy and "feminine charm" to a scheme to marry into a wealthy, elite family. Whenever the camp grumblers discussed this, their tone was laced with sarcasm, yet they also took a certain pride in the conviction that if Toris set her sights on a rich young heir, she would easily win him over. In reality, however, the situation was quite the opposite: Toris wasn't aiming for some wealthy scion, but rather for Commander Leonie, who was right there in their midst.
While Toris appeared to be a woman with clear, calculated goals, the driving force behind her actions was deeply emotional, rooted in jealousy, a competitive streak, and a desire for exclusive possession regarding Leonie. For Toris, nothing brought greater satisfaction than the inner conviction that she had "bested" Commander Leonie. Surpassing Leonie’s records counted as a victory; so did the fact that people treated her with warmth and smiles (after all, it’s hard to be harsh to someone who is always pleasant) while speaking bluntly or complaining to Leonie.
Of course, none of that compared to the thrill of directly outdoing Leonie to her face. Seeing Leonie lose her temper or look dejected would bring a genuine, delighted smile to Toris’s face. And if she could serve up one of her homemade desserts at such a moment, watching Leonie eat the sweets until her spirit and body were "corrupted" into a state of soft, lazy indulgence, that was, for Toris, the ultimate pleasure. In Toris's dreams, Leonie is constantly being humiliated in public, eventually reduced to pitifully begging Toris for help; it is no wonder her comrades say she has a bad sleeping habit, she even lets out strange chuckles in her sleep every night...
Such notions are a bit hard for Leonie and the others to fathom, and they clash sharply with the image Toris projects to the outside world. Leonie simply feels that this ambitious young girl is a bit too eager to curry favor with her, and that perhaps she ought to turn down those offered sweets every now and then... Hmm, she’ll definitely say no next time.
